NSERC CREATE Training Program in Arctic Atmospheric Science

2012 Summer School in Arctic Atmospheric Science

The NSERC CREATE Training Program in Arctic Atmospheric Science is a
six-year project, begun in 2010 and supported by NSERC's Collaborative
Research and Training Experience Program. Our Program takes advantage of
the unique capabilities of the Polar Environment Atmospheric Research
Laboratory (PEARL), which is run by the Canadian Network for the Detection
of Atmospheric Change (CANDAC) and located at Eureka, Nunavut. Our goal is
to significantly enhance the educational opportunities available to young
researchers interested in polar, atmospheric, and climate sciences,
enabling them to build collaborations, and to develop scientific,
technical, communications, and organizational skills.

We are pleased to announce a Summer School addressing the broad theme of
Arctic Atmospheric Science, offered from July 23 to 27, 2012 in Alliston,
Ontario. The Summer School is intended for graduate students and
postdoctoral fellows working in the field, with some places available for
CREATE undergraduate summer interns. Attendees will have the opportunity
to learn from experienced researchers in a small and comfortable setting.
In addition to classroom lectures, students will participate in a hands-on
photochemical modelling tutorial; engage in a diverse career panel
discussion; develop strategies for linking scientific knowledge to public
engagement, education and outreach; and present their own research during
a poster session.

Topics to be covered include aerosol-cloud-climate interactions, Arctic
halogen chemistry, polar stratospheric ozone, middle atmosphere dynamics,
satellite remote sensing of pollution, global climate, glacier-climate
interactions in the Arctic, carbon cycling in glacial environments, space
and ground-based atmospheric instrumentation, science support management
at South Pole Station, Inuit culture, teaching and education in the
Canadian Arctic, and science journalism. Confirmed speakers and panelists
include Jean-Pierre Blanchet (Université du Québec à Montréal), Florent
Bouguin (ABB), Tim Canty (University of Maryland, College Park), James R.
Drummond (Dalhousie University), Lynn Harvey (University of Colorado at
Boulder), Brian Manning (Nunavut Arctic College), Chris McLinden
(Environment Canada), Stella Melo (Canadian Space Agency), Margaret Munro
(Postmedia News), Martin Sharp (University of Alberta), and Paul Sullivan
(Raytheon Polar Services).

Admission to the Summer School includes all on-site food and
accommodation. A chartered bus will be available to take attendees to and
from downtown Toronto, however, attendees are responsible for travel
between their home institution and Toronto or Alliston. To apply, please
fill out the application form obtained from the Opportunities section of
the CREATE website (www.candac.ca/create). A completed application must
also include a CV and a short letter of support from the applicant's
supervisor. Please submit your application by email to
create_summerschool@atmosp.physics.utoronto.ca.

Location: Nottawasaga Inn, Alliston, Ontario, Canada.
Dates: July 23-27, 2012.
Eligibility: Open to Canadian and international graduate students and
post-doctoral fellows, as well as CREATE summer undergraduate interns.
Tuition: There are no tuition fees, however, attendees must cover the cost
of return travel from their home institution.

A student of mine in interested in the heat buget of the continent.

Do you know of any data file that he might use to begin his search?

His premise is, "There is no effect on the overall heat buget of Antarctica due to all of the research projects and tourists."

Antarctica Month at APECS - Action Needed!

Dear Atmospheric/Climate Sciences APECS Members:

1 December is Antarctica Day, and APECS is celebrating by making the entire month of December Antarctica Month! APECS will be featuring Antarctic research of all types, all month long. We'll be collecting and posting photos, videos, websites, research posters, and more!

We want to ensure atmospheric and climate sciences are represented in this effort. What does this mean for you? It means that now is the time to share your Antarctic Research with the community! Send your photos and videos of work in the Antarctic to Julia (julia.schmale@gmail.com); if the videos are already online, just send a link and we'll embed them. Add an Antarctic-themed poster to the Virtual Poster Session (http://www.apecs.is/virtual-poster-session/submit-your-poster/). And throughout the month, start some conversations (on this list or elsewhere) about Antarctic science.

If you're really feeling excited about sharing your Antarctic science, we're looking for a volunteer to participate in an APECS webinar. The theme will be Antarctic Climate Change, and the webinar will take place on 1 December. This is a great opportunity to tell an interested and supportive community what you're working on and why it's so cool. To help address this critical need, MentorNet is announcing this week that its program is now open to all STEM students, especially woman and minorities, from any campus.

Session 2.5.5, IPY 2012 From Knowledge to Action

Montreal, Canada

Organizers of session 2.5.5, "Improved Projections and Forecasts from
Climate and Weather Models" announce a call for abstracts. This session
will be convened at the IPY 2012 From Knowledge to Action conference,
scheduled for 22-27 April 2012 in Montreal, Canada.

The importance of climate change in the polar regions is well known.
Yet, the complexity of the polar climate system and the lack of
consistent, long-term observations have limited our progress in
understanding this critical and fast changing region of the earth. The
lack of observations coupled with the threat of changes to the
high-latitude environment makes improving our ability to model the
weather and climate of polar regions extremely urgent. Improving our
modeling capability requires synthesis of our knowledge of important
physical processes from weather to climate scales and an evaluation of
how well they are represented in state of the art climate and weather
models. Challenges facing modelers range from providing accurate
short-term forecasts of hazardous weather, such as polar lows and
extreme winds, to improving long-term projections of climate change and
separating the anthropogenic signal from natural variability.

This session will focus on advances in climate and weather modeling in
the polar regions that took place during the International Polar Year
(IPY) 2007-2008 and advances in polar modeling that have occurred as a
result of IPY activities. Presentations are invited on weather and
climate modeling on all time scales, for both the Arctic and Antarctic.
Presentations that discuss modeling advances resulting from IPY
observational campaigns are encouraged, as are presentations that
discuss the application of polar models to understand the physical
processes acting in the polar climate system.

The abstract submission deadline is 11:59 p.m. Eastern Standard Time

Due to an unfortunate technical mishap, our pin board of "research update" sticky notes accidentally got erased.

While unintentional, this actually presents a nice opportunity - how many of us are doing exactly the same thing we were doing in April when the notes first got added? I know my research has evolved over the past several months, and I'm sure the same is true for many of you.

Summer school at Svalbard on impact of climate change

The Norwegian Scientific Academy for Polar Research invites in cooperation with Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Center, Nansen Scientific Society and UNIS to the summer school “Impact of climate change on resources, maritime transport and geopolitics in the Arctic and the Svalbard area. The summer school takes place during 21 – 28 August at Norwegian Scientific Academy for Polar Research, “Isdammen” and The University Center in Svalbard (UNIS), Longyearbyen.

The Summer School will accept applications from 20 Ph. D. students and Post-docs in the fields of Arctic Climate, Arctic Resources, Maritime Transport and Geopolitics.

The Summer School will provide air travel from Oslo on Sunday morning 21st August to Longyearbyen Svalbard and return to Oslo on 28th August as well as accommodation and food.

Hi all-

As you may have seen, this month APECS is highlighting Atmospheric & Climate research done by APECS members - i.e. you guys! We're trying to build a better community and a more visible record of what APECS members get up to, and we're doing this primarily through a new page on the APECS website: http://www.apecs.is/research-fields/atmosphere

What we really need are more contributions. There are a few ways you can help:
1. Write a 1-sentence update telling us what type of research you're doing and post it as a comment under "Submit Your Research Update". (We're working on a nicer interface for this, but it probably won't be done for awhile.)

2. Send us reference information publications you're on. You DON'T have to be first author - we're happy to highlight any contribution!

3. Send us a link to your research page or research blog

4. Send us any great polar / atmospheric science resources you've found (e.g. Arctic Report Card, Arctic Meteorology Primer...)

We're going to re-email the whole APECS list at the end of the week, so we'd love to post your contributions before that. If you have anything (or any other ideas!), send them to me (jafisher@fas.harvard.edu) or Julia (julia.schmale@mpic.de).

Next month - our Virtual Poster Session

Dear all,

This April the atmospheric research and climate change discipline will be hosting the APECS Virtual Poster Session (VPS). We would like to invite you to make suggestions on topics that you would like to discuss, learn about, and / or share with an international community in the VPS. It can be about your research, a topic that you don't know much about but would like to get familiar with, issues that are currently treated in the literature... whatever comes to your mind!

Once we have formulated a topic from all your suggestions, at least two people will be able to virtually present a poster about their research to an international community. You can also suggest a mentor whom you would like to share knowledge on a certain topic. This is your opportunity to actively select what our discipline will focus on next month!

So, if you recently prepared a poster for a conference or are about to do so, why not practice your presentation in the VPS? It's easy and you'll have a great audience from all over the world to discuss your research with and from whom to get valuable feedback!

We are really looking forward to getting your input and hear your suggestions!

Conference announcement

Dear all,

The American Meteorological Society's Board on Societal Impacts is organizing a conference on climate adaptation called: Practical Solutions for a Warming World, 18-20 July 2011, in Asheville, North Carolina.
This seems like a great opportunity to get in contact with lot's of different people (see below)!
The conference organizers are very interested in having an APECS event. So this is where we need your help! Is anyone planning to attend this conference and would like to participate in organizing an APECS event (panel, social, poster etc.)? Also, those who would like to attend a potential APECS event would have to submit an abstract by the deadline (see below).

Recognition that even if the world were to take aggressive action to curb greenhouse gas emissions there will still be a substantial amount of warming has spurred interest in adapting to climate variability and change. This conference will showcase state-‐of-‐the-‐art adaptation research, present real-‐world examples from practitioners, and explore the role of science in adaptation planning and decision-‐making. Oral, poster, and panel presentations are solicited from a wide range of academic disciplines and professional groups (including local and state governments, government agencies, and non-‐governmental organizations). This multidisciplinary conference solicits cutting edge research and practice examples across a wide range of topics.

Is anyone going to EGU?

Dear climate listserv members!

Is anyone of you going to EGU in Vienna at the beginning of April?
We would very much like to organize some kind of APECS event since it is
such a big conference and many potential new APECS members will be
around :-).
Can anyone who is going imagine to organize an APECS panel, a social
event or just put up an APECS poster? Unfortunatelly, I am not going to
EGU this year, but I would definitely give you a hand in organizing the
APECS event at EGU. We have some good guides and materials that make
organizing an event quite simple.
So don't hesitate to help "shaping the future of polar research"!

Applications are now being accepted for the first ever Gordon Research Seminar on Radiation and Climate, to be held July 9-10 2011 at Colby College, Maine. The Seminar will provide a unique forum for graduate students, post-docs, and early career scientists to present their work and exchange cutting edge ideas with other scientists with comparable levels of experience and education. The collegial atmosphere of this Seminar, with programmed discussion sessions as well as opportunities for informal gatherings in the afternoons and evenings, provides an avenue for young scientists from different disciplines to brainstorm and promotes cross-disciplinary collaborations in the various research areas represented. Attendees of the Seminar are expected to attend the Gordon Research Conference that immediately follows it (July 10-15, 2011).

The focus of the Seminar is on outstanding issues in climate change, particularly those in which the interactions between clouds, water vapor, aerosols, and precipitation play a major role. The Conference will feature a broad range of topics, including grand challenges in atmospheric radiation and climate, cloud and water vapor feedbacks, aerosol-cloud-precipitation-climate interactions across scales, new approaches for remote sensing and in-situ observations of clouds, water vapor, aerosols, and precipitation, and multi-scale modeling challenges.

The GRS consists of two science sessions with oral presentations and two poster sessions. The oral sessions will consist of four presentations of 20 minutes each, with 10 minutes of additional discussion time for each presentation. Each oral session is co-chaired by a distinguished senior scientist and an early career scientist (grad student or post-doc). Oral presentations will be selected from the submitted abstracts. In addition, a keynote address will be given by Brian Soden, professor of meteorology and physical oceanography at University of Miami.

How to deal with your thesis adviser

Hi all,

I just came across an article about the relation between PhD students
and their thesis advisers (see attachement) and thought that it might be
really helpful for many of us. It gives some great and simple ideas on
how to improve communication and on how to get the type of feedback you
need. The key is that the student is as much responsible as the adviser
to develop a good professional relationship.

Arctic System Science (graduate course)

This course is for the student with analytical interests for understanding variations of concurrent biological and geophysical processes in arctic ecosystems. Specifically, the course will provide the student with a general analytical knowledge of how species life history, inter-trophic interactions and geophysical processes vary over time and space in relation to environmental changes including climate.
During the course, the student will get hands-on experience of working with and analysing large, complex data-sets through direct access to the huge database provided by the long-term monitoring programme at Zackenberg, Northeast Greenland.
The combination of a broad theoretical understanding of how arctic ecosystems are structured and functions together with specific analytical exercises using real data will provide the student with a solid foundation for the management of natural resources in the Arctic.

I am conducting an international on-line survey as part of research at the University of Western Australia on why people chose to study in science and science-related areas.

I would appreciate it if you could circulate the on-line survey link and message (text below and also attached as a Word file) to science contacts in your email list.

One of the purposes of the survey is to make comparisons across countries and cultures on the reasons that people choose to study science - consequently I am seeking the most diverse group of science-qualified respondents and would like for all regions to contribute their perspective. Dr. Linnea Avallone, Ms. Laura Edwards, and myself were funded by the NSF ADVANCE to host ASCENT, a program for women in Atmospheric Science and Meteorology.

Atmospheric Science Collaboration and Enriching NeTworks (ASCENT) is a program focusing on women in atmospheric science/meteorology and is designed to initiate positive professional relationships among female faculty of different ranks and postdoctoral researchers. The program consists of a three-day summer workshop with follow-up reunion events at major national meetings.While networking with like-minded women scientists, participants will have the opportunity to be involved in frank discussions to explore specific promising practices toward eliminating the "leaky pipeline",defined by the attrition of women at different stages in their academic careers.

ASCENT is now accepting applications for our 3rd workshop.

Our next workshop will be held in Steamboat Springs, Colorado from July 12-15, 2011.

Applications are DUE by MARCH 15.

The program will be open for applications from junior female scientists to participate in the workshop. Twenty junior scientists will be selected each year based on enthusiasm for science, interest in issues related to women in academic and professional settings, and how they contribute to creating a diverse group, as described in their applications. Due to the nature of this networking opportunity, we encourage participation of pre-tenure faculty members, early-career research scientists, and postdoctoral researchers seeking faculty positions.
